Journaling Scripture
2PROAPT
This seven-step process for reading the scriptures to hear God's voice was developed by Dr. Charles Miller and is detailed in his book, The Lifestyle of Healthy Leaders: Integrating Spiritual Formation and Leadership Development.
The acronym, 2PROAPT, stands for:
Pray > Preview > Read > Observe > Apply > Pray > Tell
PRAY: Quiet yourself before the Lord and ask Him to speak to you through what you read.
PREVIEW: Read quickly through the section of scripture you plan to concentrate on in one sitting.
READ: Read the passage again, slowly.
OBSERVE: Pay attention to what in the passage jumps out at you; what impressed you; what speaks to you. Journal these observations.
APPLY: Discern as best you can how the Lord would have you apply His Word to your life, today. Focus on specifics pertaining to your life as Christ's disciple, not on generalities.
PRAY (again): Confess, seek and entreat the Lord concerning His message to you today.
TELL: Just as you would very naturally share a good joke with someone soon after you heard it, so, tactfully and with a spirit of generosity, share with someone the nurture you received from God's Word. Have no agenda other than sharing something that was meaningful to you.
