I Have no Hands but Your Hands
Author, Larry Gilbert, tells of a skillfully chiseled statue of Jesus that adorns a small church yard in France. The artist captured Jesus' servant love by posing Him with outstretched arms.
During World War II, a bomb fell near the statue and it was reduced to pieces. When hostilities had ceased, members of the church located pieces and set about to rebuild the statue.
Unfortunately, they found that its fragile hands had been pulverized and could not be restored.
One member commented, "A Christ without hands is no Christ at all."
Someone suggested that they look for a new statue, but another idea prevailed. A brass plaque was attached to the statue's base that read: "I have no hands but yours."
Years later someone who saw the statue and its inscription wrote the following verse:
I have no hands but your hands to do my work today.
I have no feet but your feet to lead men on the way.
I have no tongue but your tongue to tell men how I died.
I have no help but your help to bring men to God's side.
